Class members will be working to develop the skills necessary effectively to teach university-level composition.

Term Assignments   

As a formal class, we will meet for only part the semester.  After that time, you will continue with your working in the Writing Center (or other assigned tasks) and observing in composition sections.  We will be meeting regularly, as well, to discuss teaching experiences.

Working with the assigned text readings, and based on mentoring experiences, we will

1.  Keep up with weekly materials.

Bring general questions, reactions, as well as your latest thinking about what you believe will be your style as a teacher and/or paper problems and early drafts.

2.  Compose, polish, an eight-page personal (“I-voice”) “Comp Tale” that mirrors the following general format:

 a.  A narrative of about four pages, after the fashion of the text tales.

 b.  A commentary of about equal length in which you summarize the key issues that your tale engaged—for spirit, see the “Notes” sections in the CT text chapters (and the Adler-Kassner/Wardle text).  Relate the commentary back to theory issues engaged in 5013/5023, as well as concerns raised by your experiences this term.  Try to conclude by edging toward a philosophy of teaching composition (or the composition portion of literature classes) that you think will guide your early efforts as an instructor.

 Mind, such philosophies necessarily (and constantly) evolve, over the years of one’s experience in classes.  However, quite useful is to establish a posture from which to build.


The final mark will be created from these factors:

 1.  Performance on the above written assignment (40%).

 2.  Participation in weekly 5023 discussions (30%).  An A grade in participation will be reserved for members who willingly and actively participate in our investigations of assigned texts, as judged holistically

by instructor. 

 3.  Satisfactory attendance and performance in mentored sections (20%).  Recall that, this term, you may have teaching and grading responsibilities.

 4.  Grade on the mechanics quiz (10%).




In this class, the following numerical equivalents for final grades are used: A = 100-90%; B = 89-80%; C = 79-70%; D = 69-60%; F = 59-0%.

Class members will be expected to attend prepared to discuss the day’s assignment.  All planned cuts need to be arranged in advance.

Late work cannot be accepted, without arrangement with instructor.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and 2) earned 60 hours. Students may meet this requirement in one of three ways: by passing the Writing Proficiency Exam, passing two Writing Intensive Courses (only one can be in the core), or passing English 2113. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
