Bio

Dr. Matthew D. Luttrell is Associate Professor of Music at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he serves as Director of Bands and Orchestra. In addition to directing the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Luttrell teaches Advanced Conducting and Secondary Foundations of Music Education for all music majors, and previously instructed in music technology, applied lessons for trombone, euphonium, and tuba, while serving on departmental, college, and university-level committees.

In addition to his duties at Midwestern State University, Dr. Luttrell is conductor and artistic director of the Wichita Falls Youth Symphony Orchestra, a community outreach organization for aspiring young musicians. As a performer, he serves as 2nd trombonist in the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra and is consistently showcased on faculty recitals. His diverse background includes past performances ranging from the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Boulder Philharmonic, and Mansfield Wind Symphony, to popular groups including the Temptations and Tower of Power.

Dr. Luttrell is an accomplished conductor and director. As a conductor, he has worked with various All-State ensembles for both High School and Junior High-level performers, and his ensembles have been featured at state and national performances and as exhibition groups for state professional conferences. As director, Dr. Luttrell's groups have performed at Bands of America Grand National Championships, as well as games for the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, and Dallas Cowboys of the National Football Association (USA). Current invitations for conducting include the Orquesta Sinfonica de Oriente in Santiago, Cuba as well as the Escuela Superior de Musica in Mexico City, Mexico.

Dr. Luttrell holds degrees from Arizona State University (Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Masters of Music Education), and the University of Colorado at Boulder (Bachelor of Music Education). Dr. Luttrell is a strong advocate for youth involvement in the arts, the performance of new music and cross-discipline projects, as well as programming of underrepresented composers and performers. Current research includes Prosody in classroom instruction, as well as mental health wellness for aspiring musicians. In his spare time, Dr. Luttrell is an avid cyclist. He volunteers for the Hotter n' Hell Hundred and serves as a city ambassador for Bike Wichita Falls, an advocacy group supporting cycling for the Texoma Region.
