Supplies: a 1 1/2-inch three-ring binder (1 binder will hold 1143 and 0043 materials), 5 labeled dividers (Notes, Grammar, Writing Resources, Papers, Research), notebook paper (not jagged-edged spiral paper), pens/pencils, highlighter, black Sharpie, D2L email (not compatible with cell phones) 

Passing this course requires a final grade of C or better.  Your grade in ENGL 0043 is part of your overall GPA.

Course Grade--Your grades in this course are based on this scale: A=100-90%, B=89-80%; C=79-70%; D=69-60%; F=59%-0%. According to MSU's Undergraduage Catalogue, "letter grades have the following significance: A indicates excellent work, B indicates good work, C indicates satisfactory work, D indicates passing work, F indicates failing work" (73). Consequently, an essay that meets the basic requirements earns a C not an A or B.  If you wish to earn As and Bs, you will have to work hard to produce better than satisfactory, or average, writing.

Attendance is this class is mandatory. You're allowed 4 absences. Then each additional absence lowers your participation grade by 5 points. That is more than a full week of class--too much to miss in college. Don't miss out on an education due to absences. If you are unable to attend class due to illness, watch the live stream of that day's lesson through Zoom on D2L. Watching the class through Zoom does not make you present for class, but it may help you keep up in the course. Absences are excused only through the dean of students at student.affairs@msutexas.edu or 940.397.7500.

The policy for submitting late work is as follows:

• I do not accept late homework, which consists of assignments from Clear Thinking & Writing.
• I do not accept late grammar quizzes or writing quizzes.
• I do not accept late timed-writing essays.
• Late papers earn a grade deduction of 10 points per day.  

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and 2) earned 60 hours. Students may meet this requirement in one of three ways: by passing the Writing Proficiency Exam, passing two Writing Intensive Courses (only one can be in the core), or passing English 2113. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016. Areas excluded from concealed carry are appropriately marked, in accordance with state law.
