Course/Catalog Description:Theoretical study of the historical foundations and interactions between sport, society, and culture.  



Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Course Competencies


Satisfactory completion of the course will document that students have demonstrated the ability to:

1.   Examine sport as a microcosm of society from the cultural and social perspectives.

2.   Explore both social and cultural factors that influence the administration of sport programs and those that participate.

Class Delivery/Meeting Information

This course is a fully online course using MSUTexas Desire to Learn (D2L) platform. Students are expected to check in a minimum of two (2) days each week to be able to stay up to date on presentations, available material, and assignments. Access to the MSU D2L online management system will be made available to each student. Each student is expected to be familiar with this program as it provides a primary source of communication regarding assignments, examination materials, and general course information. You can log into D2L through the MSU Homepage. If you experience difficulties, please contact the technicians listed for the program or contact your instructor.

Additionally, ZOOM will be used in this course for some lectures or meetings. 

 

Course Materials: Access to a personal computer with Microsoft Software, high-speed Internet, and the ability to access D2L (the MSUTexas Online Learning System, and Smart phone, IPad or similar technology for video assignments.

 

Technology: All students must have internet access and be able to: send and receive e-mail, create, send, and receive Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, or PowerPoint documents; use Google documents, sites & slides, use Desire 2 Learn portal through MSUTexas portal, YouTube, and ZOOM meeting platform for class assignments/meetings & presentations, post to discussion boards, appropriately use internet links and online websites such as Google Docs, Sites, Slides, etc.



Online Computer Requirements


Taking an online class requires you to have access to a computer (with Internet access) to complete and upload your assignments. It is your responsibility to have (or have access to) a working computer in this class. Assignments and tests are due by the due date, and personal computer technical difficulties will not be considered a reason for the instructor to allow students extra time to submit assignments, tests, or discussion postings. Computers are available on campus in various areas of the buildings as well as the Academic Success Center. Your computer being down is not an excuse for missing a deadline!! There are many places to access your class! Our online classes can be accessed from any computer in the world that is connected to the internet. Contact your instructor immediately upon having computer trouble. If you have technical difficulties in the course, there is also a student helpdesk available to you. The college cannot work directly on student computers due to both liability and resource limitations however they are able to help you get connected to our online services. For help, log into D2L.

Attendance

Students are encouraged to attend all meetings of the classes in which they are enrolled. Although in general students are graded on intellectual effort and performance rather than attendance, absences may lower the student’s grade where class attendance and class participation are deemed essential by the faculty member. Instructor’s records will stand as evidence of absences. A student with excessive absences or the lack of signing on to the course portal for an online course may be dropped from a course by the instructor. Any individual faculty member or college has the authority to establish an attendance policy, providing the policy is in accordance with the General University Policies.

Late Work 

As adults, students, and working professionals I understand you must manage competing demands on your time. However, since this is only a 5-week course there will be no late work accepted. Should you forget to submit work by the posted deadline it will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero (0).



Make-Up Work/Tests

Due to the length of the course this summer, no make-up, or late work or tests will be allowed.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Obligation to Report Sex Discrimination under State and Federal Law

Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016. Areas excluded from concealed carry are appropriately marked, in accordance with state law.
